Inhalte: Over the course of past decades, it has been revealed that natural elements can play a major role in increasing the restorativeness of healthcare environments, as well as improving the wellbeing of patients, their families, and medical staff. But interestingly, the main focus of architects has been on green elements. Although the sky is an important natural blue element, it has been rarely considered in the design of healthcare settings.
Generally, the sky is described to provide spaciousness, calmness, scenes with moving clouds, birds’ flight, natural lighting, etc. All these features lead to a great potential for creating soothing and invigorating environments for healthcare users that experience a high amount of stress and anxiety.
With sky exposure, not only it is possible to create a more pleasant working environment for medical staff, but it is also possible to enhance the healing process of patients. By providing positive distractions and by drawing the attention of patients to the outside world, for a while it distracts them from their pain and fear about what will be happening to them.
In this semester, we will explore how architects can bring the sky into the healthcare facilities. Furthermore, we will think about the ways to improve patients‘ perception twoards sky and how to get the most health benefits from sky exposure for individuals going through a stressful procedure in healthcare settings.
Three tasks will be designed in three different healthcare settings. Each of them will focus on the design of a ceiling as a built element which defines the interaction between patients and the sky.

Die Stegreifreihe wird in deutscher und englischer Sprache durchgeführt.
