Alternative Narratives of Heimat
Wir alle haben unterschiedliche Geschichten von Heimat. Wir alle erklären Heimat auf verschiedene Weise. Egal, ob es sich um denselben Ort, dieselbe Stadt oder dasselbe Land handelt. Wir werden immer unterschiedliche Geschichten haben. Aber was ist Heimat denn eigentlich? Wir alle müssen das Gefühl haben, dass Heimat etwas Persönliches ist und dass sie nur uns gehört. Aber stimmt das? Ist Heimat persönlich? Kann man Heimat teilen? Oder teilen wir nur den Begriff der Heimat?
In dem Essay "Making Heimat" (Cachola Schmal et al. 2016), der für die 15. Internationale Architekturbiennale in Venedig verfasst wurde, wird "Heimat" als ein deutscher Begriff beschrieben, der sich schlecht in andere Sprachen übersetzen lässt. Weder das englische "home" oder "home country" noch das italienische und spanische "casa" oder "patria" decken den Bedeutungsumfang des Deutschen ab. Während sie eine Ähnlichkeit in der Übersetzung des Wortes "Heim" mit "Heimat" finden, stellen dieselben Autoren den Ort in Frage, der uns geprägt hat. Sie beschreiben "Heimat" als etwas, das wir in uns selbst tragen.
Ist Heimat also ein räumliches Konzept oder ist sie "nur" eine Narrative des Raums - unsere ganz eigene Narrative?
In diesem Kurs werden wir untersuchen, was das Konzept der Heimat für jeden Teilnehmer bedeutet. Mit den Mitteln des Storytelling werden wir tief in ein persönliches Konzept von Heimat eintauchen und versuchen zu verstehen, was es sein kann. Wir werden Heimat in die Elemente zerlegen, die wir mögen und die wir hassen, die uns glücklich und die uns wütend machen. Wir werden unsere derzeitigen Geschichten von Heimat in neue, alternative Narrative verwandeln.

Alternative Narratives of Heimat
We all have different stories of Heimat. We all explain Heimat in various ways. No matter if it’s the same place, city or country. We will always have different stories. But what is Heimat after all? We must all feel that Heimat is personal and that it belongs just to us. But does it? Is Heimat personal? Can Heimat be shared? Or do we just share the concept of Heimat?
In the essay “Making Heimat” (Cachola Schmal et al. 2016) written for the 15th International Architecture Biennale of Venice, “Heimat” is described as a German concept that doesn’t translate easily into other languages. Neither the English “home” or “home country” nor the Italian and Spanish “casa” or “patria” encompass the range of meaning of the German. While they find similarity in the translation of the word “Heim” to “Home”, the same authors question the place that shaped us. They describe “Heimat” as something we carry within ourselves.
So, is Heimat a spatial concept or is it “just” a narrative of space – our very own narrative?
During this course, we will explore what the concept of Heimat represents for every participant. Using the tools of storytelling we will delve deep into a personal concept of Heimat and try to understand what it can be. We will dissect Heimat into the elements we like and those we hate, those that make us happy and those that make us angry. We will take our current stories of Heimat and transform them into new alternative narratives.
